School counselors

School counselors provide services that focus on the promotion of preventive and educational strategies to enhance the cognitive, emotional, and behavioral development; effective decision-making skills; and resiliency capabilities of students.

In 2016, the ratio of schools counselors to students in Minnesota was 1:681, the lowest it had been in more than a decade. Comparatively, in 2012 the average number of counselors per student for all US states was 1:470 while the American School Counselor Association recommends a 1:250 ratio.
