Agency

The Board accomplishes the mission of promoting public health and safety in relation to the barbering profession and barbering services proved to the public by:
  • Setting standards of practice and conduct;
  • Reviewing applications in a thorough manner to ensure compliance with statutes and rules;
  • Setting educational requirements and examination standards;
  • Conducting barber examinations to assure professional standards of service are met;
  • Inspecting barber shops and schools to ensure compliance with statues and rules;
  • Responding to inquiries, complaints, and reports regarding registrations and conduct of registered barbers and unregistered practitioners;
  • Providing information and education to the public;
  • Providing clear and concise inspection reports of barber shops. 

Mission

As a regulatory Board the mission of the Board of Barber Examiners is to promote public health and safety by assuring that barbers are appropriately trained and demonstrate the skills necessary to conduct barber services in a safe, sanitary, and appropriate environment. 

Strategy

The Board's registration and inspection processes are designed to assure that barbers and barbershops meet or exceed the legislative and Board established criteria designed to protect public health and safety. 

Recent News

  • Barber Shop Renewal Forms are scheduled for mailing on May 12, 2014.  On line renewal for Barber Shops will be made available on May 13, 2014.  A credit Card processing fee will apply to all on line renewals.

        Additional important information is given to individuals that register to take the exams.   
        You should read all materials provided regarding the examinations when you register.  

  • The Board has completed the rule making process to update MN Rules Chapter 2100 to align with MN Statute 154 changes enacted during the 2013 legislative session.   The Board approved the final order amending its rules at the November 25, 2013 meeting of the board.  The new rules will be published in the Minnesota Register on December 16, 2013.  
  • Several changes to MN Statutes Chapter 154 governing barbering were enacted and have gone into effect July 1, 2013 May 30 Memo 
  • Current forms of payment are check, money order, or cash in the office.  WE DO NOT KEEP CASH ON HAND SO PLEASE BRING THE EXACT AMOUNT. We do not accept over payments in any amount.  You may pay by credit or debit card though the on line payment system only.
  • The Minnesota Board of Barber Examiners meets at 8:30 am at 2829 University Avenue South East, Minneapolis, MN  every other month. Meetings are held in Conference Room A on the 4th floor at 2829 University Avenue SE, Minneapolis, MN unless otherwise noted on the schedule.
