Gov. Mark Dayton has declared the week of Sept. 22, 2013, Infant Safe Sleep Week (PDF). The week provides an opportunity for individuals, organizations, government entities, health care facilities and coalitions to promote the awareness of safe sleep practices. They aim to educate parents, families and child care providers about the steps they can take to ensure sleeping infants' safety. An important step is to place infants to sleep on their backs in a crib that is free of blankets, pillows, bumper pads, toys and free to breathe. Events publicizing infant safe sleep will occur at family child care homes in Alexandria and Burnsville.
