Start owning your future

The Dayton-Prettner Solon administration is sponsoring Own Your Future to encourage individuals to create a plan for their long-term care, including how to pay for it.

Take an active role in planning for your long-term care needs

This short video asks four questions you need to answer before you can create a long-term care plan.

  1. Are family and friends willing to take care of you?
  2. Does your home have a bedroom, bathroom and kitchen on the same floor?
  3. How are you going to pay for in-home care, assisted living or a nursing home?
  4. Have you written down your wishes for end-of- life care?

Survey shows many not ready to pay for care as they age

More than 30 percent of Minnesotans do not know how they would pay for the long-term care the vast majority will need as they grow old, according to the 2014 Minnesota Department of Human Services State Fair survey.  An additional 13 percent of respondents said they would rely on government programs to pay for long-term care.  More information is available in the survey report.

Financing options report released

A subgroup of the Own Your Future Advisory Panel recently completed the report “Financing Options to Help Minnesotans Pay for Long-Term Care.”  The report lists overarching recommendations on how to help middle-income households pay for long-term care costs and how to promote greater use of existing financing products as well as strategies to encourage new approaches to the financing of long-term care.
