For Immediate Release:
MINNETONKA, MN – To kick off the 2013 Unclaimed Property Auction, Commissioner Mike Rothman will visit the preview on Wednesday, July 24 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Commissioner Rothman will be available to meet with media outlets and discuss the auction and the work of the Unclaimed Property Division. The preview will provide an opportunity to view items up for auction ahead of the first day of bidding.
The auction occurs once every ten years and features unclaimed items left behind in safe-deposit boxes by people who have passed away or have left the boxes dormant for an extended period of time. Money from all of the safe-deposit box items that are sold will remain in the accounts of the original owners. This year’s auction will be held July 25 and 26 at the Sheraton Minneapolis West Hotel in Minnetonka both in person and online. The auction starts each day at 8:30 a.m.
The items up for bid this year include: rare currency such as $1,000 bills, vintage coins, historical Minnesota state bank notes; collectable sports memorabilia including autographed baseball cards of Sandy Koufax, an autographed Joe DiMaggio picture, a Babe Ruth signed baseball; and other items including a tiffany cigarette lighter, and a wide variety of gold and vintage jewelry. Also up for bidding is a particularly noteworthy collection of over 80 works of art from internationally-known modernist artist Jenny de Bloot.
