Commissioner Mike Rothman to discuss flood insurance with local officials, tour flood plain

ST. PAUL, MN - Minnesota Department of Commerce Commissioner Mike Rothman will visit Shakopee and St. Peter on Friday, February 18 as part of a statewide flood insurance education and outreach tour. Rothman's tour will include communities that the National Weather Service (NWS) has indicated are at risk for flooding in the upcoming spring melt.

"This tour is a proactive effort to inform Minnesota residents and businesses about flood insurance, and further solidify state-local collaboration on flood preparation and response efforts," Rothman said. "Minnesota communities may experience record flood levels this spring. It is our responsibility to work together, plan ahead, and do everything possible to ensure this situation is handled properly."

Commissioner Rothman will begin his visit in Shakopee at the Scott County Law Enforcement Center Emergency Operations Center and meet with Shakopee Mayor John Schmitt, Scott County Emergency Management Director Chris Weldon and other Scott County officials. He will then travel to St. Peter where Mayor Tim Strand, members of the City Council, Chief of Police Matthew Peters, City Administrator Todd Prafke, and Public Works Director Lewis Giesking will be-on hand to discuss flood insurance issues and other concerns with the commissioner.

Following the meeting, city officials will accompany Commissioner Rothman on a tour of the Minnesota Riverbank and flood-prone St. Peter residences and businesses. Members of the press are encouraged to attend the public meeting and join local officials on the tour. The agenda for the afternoon is listed below.
