Weights and Measures Week is celebrated on March 1-7 each year to commemorate John Adams signing the first United States weights and measures law on March 2, 1799. Here in Minnesota, the Commerce Department’s Weights and Measures Division became the state’s first consumer protection agency in 1885.
Today, the Weights and Measures Division offers a wide array of services to businesses and consumers. This includes precision calibration services, the petroleum lab tests fuels for compliance with international standards while our investigators protect consumers and preserve equity in the marketplace through package checking, and commercial scale and meter inspections. In 2013 alone, our field staff inspected 32,554 gas pumps to ensure that they are accurate and safe to use.
The next time you are at a gas pump or grocery store, look for the Department of Commerce sticker and you can be confident that you are getting what you paid for. This is all due to the dedication of highly trained regulatory officials who are working behind the scenes every day to maintain integrity in commerce.
