Department staff will go door to door with insurance information for homeowners

(St. Paul, MN…) - Commerce Commissioner Glenn Wilson announced today he has sent an Insurance Disaster Recovery Team to south Minneapolis after storms damaged several homes there Wednesday afternoon. Members of the Department's Consumer Response Team will be going door-to-door with valuable information for homeowners about consumer assistance services available from the Department of Commerce.

"As we have following other storms, our Insurance Disaster Recovery Teams will help citizens with the insurance process," said Commissioner Wilson. "Many insurance companies are already working with homeowners in south Minneapolis. We will be available to answer questions and provide information to help the claims process go smoothly."

Commerce Department staff will visit directly with homeowners between E 36th Street and E 46th Street along Portland Avenue that incurred damage as a result of the storm and provide them with information about the consumer assistance services available from the Department of Commerce. The teams will go door-to-door on Thursday and then assess whether more help is needed throughout the week.

The Insurance Disaster Recovery Teams also will distribute Disaster Recovery Team cards with a 1-800 number and email address for consumers to use if they experience difficulties resolving their insurance claims, and detailed information on both homeowners and automobile insurance coverage.

Wilson reminded homeowners that many "problems" with insurance companies are often misunderstandings. It is important to contact the company insurance adjuster with any questions as soon as possible, keep policy and claim numbers handy, and start a file of all correspondence including notes from any conversations.

Consumers who have questions or concerns about their insurance coverage can call the Consumer Response Team at the Minnesota Department of Commerce at 1-800-657-3602 or visit www.insurance.mn.gov
