Seminar to address residential solar structural opportunities, limitations

A seminar called “Residential Solar Panel Roof Top Installations—Structural Limitations and Opportunities” will be presented on Jan. 15 at the 58th Annual Institute for Building Officials at the University of Minnesota. The course will explain how to apply a recent report, Standardized Load Tables Characterizing Residential Solar Thermal and Solar Electric Installations for Residential Structures in Minnesota, that offers guidance to building officials and solar installers regarding the need for structural review of planned residential solar installations. Use of standardized tables for residential solar will be covered along with policies to increase solar deployment. Stacy Miller of the Minnesota Department of Commerce and Jason Hanlon of Braun Intertec Corporation are the presenters. The Institute provides continuing education for code officials and inspectors from the building, electrical, fire, housing, mechanical, elevator, and plumbing fields as well as permit technicians. Read more about the seminar and the overall conference, which runs from Jan. 8-23 at the Continuing Education and Conference Center on the St. Paul campus.
