Poultry Diagnostic Surveillance

Birds and Sample Guidelines

To be eligible for payment of fees by the Board the following conditions must be met:

Poultry/Poultry flocks over four weeks of age with respiratory or clinical signs suspicious of avian influenza shall have six (6) to eight (8) birds per flock submitted.

Birds for necropsies must double bagged, with the UM-VDL Necropsy and Sample Submission form completed for delivery to the UM-VDL at the owner’s expense.

In addition to birds submitted for necropsy, 10 blood/serum samples per flock will be required. For turkey flocks, samples will be tested for a panel of respiratory diseases (Avian Influenza, Avian Pneumovirus, Newcastle Disease, Bordetella avium and ORT). Similar tests for chickens and other types of poultry will be discussed with the UM-VDL pathologist on call. All cases/flocks tested for AI as described will have the testing fees waived, fees paid by the Board.
