Farmed Cervidae Program

In Minnesota, deer and elk raised for any purpose are considered farmed cervidae. Members of the cervidae family include white-tailed deer, red deer, mule deer, fallow deer, sika deer, elk, moose, caribou, reindeer, and muntjac.

Under chapter 1721.0370 of Minnesota Statutes, farmed cervidae are livestock and are not considered wild animals for purposes of game farm, hunting or wildlife laws.

All farmed cervidae must be registered with the Board of Animal Health. To register your herd, please contact the Board of Animal Health at 651-201-6804.
