Hundreds of double-crested cormorants, American white pelicans and other water birds were discovered dead or dying at two Minnesota lakes early last week. The discovery was made by Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) staff who were in the area banding pelicans at Minnesota Lake in Faribault County and Pigeon Lake in Meeker County.

A full-scale nuclear preparedness exercise for the Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant took place Tuesday, July 22. Department of Homeland Security will conduct a public briefing on the results of the exercise at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 25, in the Goodhue County Emergency Operations Center at 430 West Sixth St. in Red Wing. Members of the news media and the general public are invited to attend the briefing.

The Minnesota Governor's Council on Developmental Disabilities (GCDD) is seeking nominations of Minnesota businesses that have an innovative approach to employing people with developmental disabilities. Nominations, which are due Aug. 10, can include entrepreneurs with disabilities and employers who hire people with developmental disabilities, provide necessary accommodations or supports and consider an inclusive workforce an ordinary part of doing business.
